Dynacord Cobra with FIR filters raises the bar for corporate event sound

Seattle-based audio specialists and Dynacord devotees TR Professional deployed the Cobra system, along with a Midas Venice 320 mixing console, Klark Teknik Square One Dynamics and EQs, and a complement of Electro-Voice REV wireless microphones systems, all adding up to a high-performance PA with a very tidy footprint. The addition of FIR filters to the mix heard the Cobra sounding better than ever—the IRIS-Net controlled PowerH amps running the system featured RCM-26 DSP modules with FIR filters.

“This was primarily a spoken-word and video-based event, staged in the round,” says Ric Webb of TR Professional. “We flew two arrays of three Cobra Tops (full-range) and a Cobra Sub from opposite points on the circular truss. I flew two more single Cobra Top boxes as fills, each one flown on either side of the center stage, and they worked like a charm. The pattern control was incredible! It’s a 30x120-degree box, and that was perfect to address the room from this central position. Technically it’s a line-array element, but it works fine as a fill too—the Cobra has proven itself extremely versatile in that sense; easily flown or ground-stacked, it always provides killer performance. One Dynacord PowerH 5000 powered the sub in each array on each side; one Power 2500 powered the three Top boxes on each side, daisy-chained to one of the fills.

TR Professional is employing FIR-filters in the RCM-26 DSP modules in the PowerH amps (controlled via IRIS-Net software), optimizing the Cobra’s already jaw-dropping performance: “The top-end clarity is unbelievable!” says Webb, “I didn’t think the Cobra system could possibly sound any better, but with the FIR filters it does!

Six channels of Electro-Voice REV wireless microphones (with a combination of OLM10 lapel and N/D767a handheld mics) ensured smooth, warm vocal reproduction on the input end of the equation. A Midas Venice 320 at FOH routed the video feeds, wireless mics, and playback sound. “And I never leave home without my Klark Teknik Square One Dynamics and EQs!” adds Webb.

TR Professional partnered with Blue Danube Productions and Hollywood Lighting for the event.
